In the 1930s Wards of Milford dismantled ships in part of the old Dockyard. After World War II the Richard Hayes group of companies continued marine engineering there.

One memorable project, in the 1950s, was the conversion of the cable ship Ocean Layer. As the Haven's oil industry developed, Hayes companies provided marine and engineering services for the tankers and refineries
