Pembroke Dock History

Pembroke Dock has a rich history that goes way back. It has played a key role in the military and has much transport and industrial heritage. The town itself has also changed dramatically over time.  Suggestions & additions can be made at enquiries@pembrokedock.wales.

The town's shipbuilders constructed 263 vessels for the Royal Navy, ranging from gunboats to battleships and the Royal Yachts Victoria and Albert I, II and III.

Pembroke Dock's first major private shipbuilding works developed in area along the shore from Front Street to Gordon Street  - along with the timber business, in early days closely linked to shipbuilding.

Before the railway reached Pembroke Dock, ships provided long distance transport for passengers and cargo.

An area which had been open farmland was, by 1901, a town of 11,000 people. Its central industry was shipbuilding - the Royal Dockyard generated the wealth which supported shops, the market, and community and civic life.
